According to data from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), generative AI (GenAI) patent filings surged worldwide in 2024 and early 2025. Over 56,000 new GenAI patent families were published during this period, exceeding totals from the previous decade combined.

China dominates this growth, with inventors there filing more than 43,000 GenAI patent families. This reflects the largest global share and a 64% annual growth rate from 2023 through mid-2025. Among the top ten GenAI patent applicants worldwide, six are Chinese firms, such as Tencent Holdings and Baidu.

Japan’s SoftBank led with nearly 3,000 filings, supporting Japan's 210% growth rate, which moved the country from fourth to third place in global filings. The U.S. showed a 92% increase, with major tech companies like Alphabet, Microsoft, and IBM among key applicants.

WIPO highlights a shift within GenAI patents from earlier technologies like generative adversarial networks (GANs)—which are AI systems that create data by competing internal networks—to large language models (LLMs), which focus on text generation. By 2025, LLM patents outnumbered GAN patents nearly three to one. Text-related GenAI patents tripled from 2023 to 2025, signaling rapid innovation in natural language applications.

Daren Tang, WIPO Director General, noted, "Gen-AI patents are no longer just filed by specialized tech firms but also by large enterprises in finance, telecommunications, and infrastructure sectors." This broadening of applicants reflects generative AI’s expanding role across industries.
